Lawyer defrauds victim of N110 million

A Lawyer identified as Gabriel Gbenoba who allegedly defrauded his victim (names withheld) to the tune of N110 million under the pretext of buying 10 acres of land along the Lagos-Ibadan-Expressway have been arrested by operatives of the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) in Lagos.

Investigations revealed that in 2013, the 55 year Gbenoba, who hails from Edo State had collected the huge sum and had promised to help the victim buy the property just after the RCCG Camp Ground.

However, Barrister Gbenoba became elusive after he had collected the money and refused responding to calls put across to him in this regard.

Surprisingly, the victim managed to trace the alleged fraudster to his hideout.

He promised to make refunds but ended up presenting 11 postdated Skye Bank cheques of N1 million each, dated April 2014. Subsequently the cheques were dishonoured by the bank because the account was empty.

Our correspondent gathered that when the victim discovered the suspect was not ready to pay back the sum, he sort for the intervention of the police.

He was immediately arrested and will be arraigned in court on Tuesday September 26th, 2017 before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The PSFU, Public Relations Officer, Audu Lawal, who confirmed the case said, “Barrister Gbenoba who was called to bar in 1987, with over 30 years experience in law, understands vividly the consequences of issuing a dud cheque, which is a serious criminal offence but for his specialised criminal activities, choose to defraud innocent Nigerians of their hard earned money.”

Audu further advised Nigerians to be weary of criminal minded lawyers who parade themselves as land agents. Reiterating that justice will be dully served as the unit will continue to be on the lookout for fraudsters.
