Lassa fever: Delta to fumigate markets

As part of its proactive measures against the spread of Lassa fever in Delta State, the state Ministry of Environment yesterday commenced the fumigation and deratilization of operation kill the rats at Ogbeogonogo, Cable, Okpanam and Abraka markets, Asaba in the state capital.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. John Nani who spoke to journalists said that the fumigation exercise will extend to other populous strategic markets, dumpsites, Delta State Hospital, Okwe and some strategic areas in the state capital.
He noted that the ministry started the exercise with sensitization, adding that the proactive measure employed by the state government was in line with the state government’s SMART Agenda.
Hon. Nani assured Deltans and the business community operating in the state of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s readiness to create conducive environment for the enhancement of the growth and development of the state.
He also advised all landlords, occupants, traders and the general public to cooperate with the Delta State Ministry of Environment. He warned the public not to eat any dead rats, cats, dogs and pigs found in the fumigated market.
The development was applauded as traders in the affected markets commended the efforts of the state government.
In another development, residents of behind Ibori Golf Club in Anwai axis of Asaba, particularly motorists have sent a ‘Save Our Soul’ message to the State government to tar the only access road to the area presently in a serious deplorable condition.
A cross section of the people made the appeal while speaking to our reporter in an interview in Asaba. The road, according to the respondents is in bad shape with potholes and gully erosion dividing the road into different portions. According to Mr. Douglas Diese, a resident and a car owner whose car was trapped in one of the potholes on the road, while lamenting the total neglect and poor state of the road said it has damaged many cars and made movement within the area difficult.
According to him, “we are suffering here, just look at the way my car has been damaged, again, I have to pay these boys about N1, 500 just to help me lift the car out of this pit. Is this what we are to face year in year out, he asked”.
Just look at me, I left home this morning just to take the children to school, I had to pay for a tricycle that took them to school few hours ago, in fact we are tired of this, the contractor abandoned this road and the government is not doing anything about it, he lamented.
