Lagos PDP chairman, Doherty queries Gbajabiamila’s interest in COVID-19 vaccination bill
…says interest misplaced, mysterious
The chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Deji Doherty has condemned the COVID -19 vaccination bill being sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila.

Doherty wondered why there was a rush to propose and approve such a bill when Nigeria or any other country was not currently in possession of any vaccine for the virus.
According to him, “We are aware that trials are currently ongoing in several countries of the world, but we have been told severally that we are still months away from getting a vaccine. In fact the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom UK said a few weeks ago that he thinks that it would take 12-18 months to get an approved vaccine.
“I feel that this is totally misplaced. At a time when the Speakers’ own constituents are struggling to feed in order to obey the stay at home order, at a time when the NCDC is struggling to cope with the upsurge in number of confirmed cases and the lack of equipment, including PPE and ventilators, at a time when Lagos State is failing to keep the citizens safe and fed, and the Federal Government is nowhere to be found, should the Speaker not instead focus on helping to resolve these more pertinent issues?

“What I believe the Speaker should be doing is helping to strengthen the NCDC testing and isolation capacity, making sure that his constituents in Lagos State have the adequate food supplies and care that they require, ensuring that the FG lives up to its responsibilities and that funds appropriated for Covid-19 are applied judiciously.”
Doherty also said that the bill was more suited for an autocracy and wondered if it would not be an infringement on the rights of every Nigerian.
Doherty hailed those who opposed the bill and promised to seek the support of the Lagos PDP representatives to quash the bill which he described as misplaced and mysterious
