Lagos collapsed building: Owners exceeded approved floors —LASG

Lagos State Government on Wednesday said preliminary findings on the collapsed five storey-building at the Lekki Gardens estate in Lekki area of the state on Tuesday, showed that it exceeded the number of floors approved by the authorities.

This is even as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the death toll at the collapsed building had risen to 34 as at 6:00pm on Wednesday. Also, following the collapse of the building, the contractor handling the project, Odofin Taiwo, has been arrested.

This much was confirmed by spokesman of the Lagos State Police command, Oladapo Badmus, who said the contractor is currently under investigation. In the meantime, the Lagos State Government, on Wednesday, sealed off the Lekki Gardens estate. This was disclosed to newsmen in a statement by the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde.

“The Lagos State government announced that based on preliminary reports and investigation, it was discovered that the collapsed building was served contravention notice for exceeding the approved floors and thereafter sealed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency,” the statement read.
