Journalists are not your enemies, NUJ President admonishes INEC

The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Waheed Odusile, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other government agencies in the country to stop seeing journalists as adversaries or enemies.

Rather, Odusile advised that journalists should be seen as friends and partners in progress.

The NUJ President spoke yesterday during an interactive session between INEC and journalists in Abuja.

He pointed out that Journalists are Nigerians and stakeholders who will not deliberately report falsehood and half-truth, knowing fully well that they are part and parcel of the system.

Odusile pointedly told the INEC chairman and other top officials of the commission in attendance that journalists don’t create stories, stressing that they only report what happened.

He stated that if a journalist is provided the right information without hiding part of it, there is no way such a journalist could twist such information.

According to him, “the authority should always see the media practitioners as partners, not as adversaries. We are Nigerians and we are patriotic. It is in your own interest to carry the media along.”
