Journalists decry spate of insecurity in Nigeria
Journalists in Cross River State have decried the spate of insecurity in Nigeria and in the state, in particular. They called on the Federal Government to adopt dialogue rather than forceful approach to address the situation with a view to avoiding the re-emergence of militancy in the Niger Delta region and the agitation for the sovereign state of Biafra.
The journalists, who had, in their June congress, held at Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre, condemned the dilapidated state of the Calabar-Itu Federal Highway, which had become a death trap to commuters, and called on the Federal Government, to as a matter of urgency, reconstruct the road, which is the only link between Cross River State and other states in the South-South and the South-East regions.
In a six points communique signed by the Chairman communique drafting committee, Ike Uchechukwu, Secretary of the union, Oka Ibor and Chairman of the State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Victor Udu, the Union urged the Federal Government to expedite action in the implementation of the 2016 Budget to strengthen the national economy.
The Union called on the Cross River State Government to strengthen existing security agencies in the State and Vigilante Groups to effectively safeguard the lives and property of the citizens.
