Institute advocates more slots for women in politics

The National Democratic Institute (NDI), yesterday in Kano, expressed concern, over the poor representation of women in politics, and called for vigorous reorientation and mentorship, so as to curb the trend and increase the number of women in politics.

At a one day Consultative round table, with the Media in Kano, the institute, lamented that women in Nigeria, currently constitute an insignificant 5-6 percent of legislators in the National Assembly and 6 per cent of the State Houses of the Assembly, while 11 State Houses of Assembly have zero representation.

He listed the challenges, responsible for the trend, to include; undemocratic party nomination processes and negative gender stereotype, which he emphasized hinder women from assuming leadership positions in public life.
