INEC launches voter registration sensitisation, records 505,906 pre-registrations in five days

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday launched a sensitisation campaign for the ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise.
The commission described voter registration as the gateway to meaningful participation in elections.
The sensitisation began with a colourful roadshow organised by the voter education and publicity department.
The campaign train moved from INEC headquarters in Maitama, distributing flyers and engaging Nigerians through Banex Plaza in Wuse and down to Wuse Market.
INEC said similar activities will be replicated across the states of the federation.
Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of INEC, urged all eligible citizens, especially young Nigerians and those who just turned 18, to take part in the exercise.
“Your Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is key to making your voice heard,” he said, while calling on political parties, civil society organisations, the media, and other stakeholders to support the awareness drive.
The CVR exercise will run across 811 centres nationwide, including all 774 local government and state offices, between 9am and 3pm, Mondays to Fridays.
Yakubu, represented by May Agbamuche-Mbu, national commissioner, also disclosed that over 505,906 Nigerians had completed online pre-registration within the first five days of the exercise.
“As at midnight of Thursday, 22nd of August, 2025, over 505,906 citizens have pre-registered since the portal opened five days ago,” he said.
“For us, this is a testament that Nigerians believe in our democracy and the efforts of the Commission to further strengthen the electoral process,” he said.
INEC explained that while the online pre-registration commenced on August 18, the physical phase will begin on August 25.
From that date, citizens who pre-registered online, as well as those registering afresh, will complete the process at INEC local government and state offices nationwide where their biometrics will be captured.
