Increase in students’ acceptance fee unsettles DELSU

…15 students get VC’s wife’s scholarship

Increase in students’ acceptance fee at the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka,  Wednesday sparked-off trouble as many of the affected students insisted they cannot afford the fees.

The university’s management had after several stakeholders’ meeting and consultations increased the acceptance fee for fresh students from N20, 000 to N30, 000 while non-Deltans would pay N50, 000, an increase the students said was on the high side.

Though, there was no protest as such, but the students were seen in different groups within the school’s premises grumbling that they might embark on massive protest to press home their disagreement.

In a statement, the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eddy Agbure, noted that despite the adjustment, all fresh students who have already paid the N20, 000 before the slight increase are not expected to pay any additional amount and urged students to disregard rumour making the rounds that those who earlier paid N20, 000 would be made to pay the difference.

Several of the students who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity, said: “Our parents cannot afford the N30, 000 plus school fees, it is too much for us, and we are appealing to the school authority to help us”.

Meanwhile, the wife of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. (Mrs.) Otaroghere Peretomode, has given scholarship to 15 students of the university after responding to an altar call made by the officiating minister, Dr. Kasarachi Innocent, for the students to re-dedicate their lives to God during the second edition of DELSU praise day.
