IGP’s wife launches war against drug abuse, child molestation

The President, Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) and Wife of the current Inspector General of Police, Barrister Asma’u Ndayako Idris on Thursday launched a campaign against Drug Abuse, Addiction, Barracks Sanitation and Child Molestation for the youths in Katsina.
Daily Times reports, that the campaign is coming at a time the state is experiencing an up surge in cases of Child Abuse, kidnappings as well as Drug Abuse which the state is rated second in the entire country.
Speaking at the occasion, Barrister Ndayako, said the fight against child molestation and drug abuse must be tackled by every necessary means.
The IGP’s who described the issue of Child molestation as a hideous crime, said parents must ensure that their children whom are entrusted on to them by God are safe from people with questionable characters.
According to her, the Police statistics at least revealed that cases of rape or molestation are recorded daily in the country.
“Drug abuse has brought about shame to Nigeria as we have been rated among countries who have high rate of drug abuse with about 40% of our youths said to be engaged in drug abuse with Kano state toping the chart follow by Katsina state.
“Prevention is always better than cure, POWA encourages that seminars should always be organized in schools, places of worship and community gatherings to enlighten the public on dangers of drug abuse.
“There should be education for the Girl-Child, fight against domestic violence, rehabilitation centers for our affected youths and women, empowerment programs to keep our youths engaged and useful to themselves and society at large.”
She noted that divorce, break down of family norms, unemployment as well as availability of all forms of drug over the counter are some of the factors responsible for drug abuse and rape in the society.
She called on religious leaders to join in the crusade against child molestation or rape and the issue of drug
abuse which has become a great threat to many families.
On his part, the State Commissioner of Police, Basen Gwana who was overwhelmed by the initiative, charged parents to take the campaign against drug abuse, child molestation and addiction serious in order to nip in the bud the predicaments bedeviling the youths across the country.
