How Borno State Governor, Zulum, escapes death from Boko Haram

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulu and others escaped an ambush by suspected Boko Haram gunmen on Wednesday. The governor was returning from Baga, a deserted fishing community in Kaka local government area of the state, when the Boko Harm insurgents opened fire on his convoy.

The attack comes three months after Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of the state, was attacked by the sect along Maiduguri-Damaturu Highway. Our report gathered that the governor is unhurt including everyone in the convoy.

Speaking to newsmen, the Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State on Media, Isa Gusau, said his principal embarked on a trip to the Baga area of the state based on information provided by soldiers that they have liberated the town from the hold of Boko Haram insurgents.

Gusau, while speaking in an interview on BBC Hausa Service on Thursdaysaid the governor and his team were in good condition.

He said, “I was not there physically. The governor was heading to Baga from Munguno because the soldiers told him they have liberated Baga from the control of Boko Haram.”

But along the way, the insurgents opened fire on the governor’s convoy and everyone scampered for their lives.

Gusau explained that some of those in the convoy including policeman, government officials, amongst others, sustained injuries in the process.

“They crawled for a distance on their knees. They sustained injuries. The Boko Haram insurgents were shooting,” he added.

This unfortunate event is occurring barely a week after the release of a video by suspected Boko Haram militants showing the execution of five NGO workers kidnapped in Bornu state. In the video, one of the victims gave his name as Luka Filibus, as he appealed to the International Rescue Committee to come to their aid. This incident further calls on the need for adequate security in the Northeast region of the country.
