A member representing Bekwara/Obudu/Obanliku federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Legor Idagbo, said that the lower chamber has constituted a committee on political agitation in the country which includes restructuring.
Hon Idagbo, who disclosed this in an interview on phone to our correspondent in Calabar, said the committee will go round the six geopolitical zones in the country and speak to all stakeholders, all interest groups, governors, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, socio-political groups and find out what their feeling are as concerning the state of the country and what can be done to reduce tension and move forward.
“When we go around people should be ready to come out and make their voice heard”. On marginalization Hon Idagbo explained was one of the reason that take the committee round adding, “As we go out, we will work with IPOB and other interest group in the South East to hear from them what we can do to reduce the marginalization which we hope will reduce tension in the country and gulped corruption.”
Hon Idagbo who represented the South-South in the committee said that after the visit, the committee will deliberate on their findings and make their recommendations to the House, “And as a result of our deliberation after moving round the zones, we will come and make recommendation to the House which will result in amendment of the constitution to reflect the yearning of the people.”
He said it was only the National Assembly that can make laws for the country. “It is only the National Assembly that makes laws for the country, so if we are to include in the constitution a certain system that will accommodate all the views of the people we will do that.”
On his personal views on restructuring, the Hon member said: “My personal views: I voted for the devolution of power, I think it will go a long way to reducing corruption in the centre and I believe that if power is devolved to the states particularly on certain issues such as resource control, taxation, electricity, road infrastructure, if all these can be put in the purview of the states, I think we will have a stronger country than what we have now, that is my personal opinion.”
