GCU class of ’83 old boys unite over school after 30 year, pledge to give back to school

The Class of 1983 old boys of Government College, Umuahia last week met for the first time after 30 years with resolve to foster unity and oneness amongst them.

Speaking with newsmen after its Annual General Meeting, (AGM) and homecoming, the Class Captain, Eze Emenike highlighted the need for “interface” amongst the class, ”having not seen each other since 30 years”.

While stating that the occasion will be made an annual one, he disclosed that the essence of the event was “to foster unity and oneness among the class and to be able to do things together, exchange ideas and business”.

He further said “We want to build bridge of friendship, needed to rebuild selves into a cohesive unit so as to work as a body”, stating the need to function as a body “to be able to fulfil our expectation as regards the restructuring project of Government College, Umuahia.

The Class of “83 Captain disclosed that the class had during the AGM decided to adopt what he called “a signature project” in their alma mater, pointing out that already, the group has started receiving funds from members of the class, assuring the main body of the GCU Old Boys Association that the class “would be a reliable partner in the quest to restore Government College, Umuahia to its past glory.

Among the class is a former Chief Press Secretary to Abia State Governor, now an aide to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Kingsley Emeruwa who assured that the Class of 83 is committed to restoring the school to its glory by assisting the main GCU Old Boys Association.

According to him, this is a task that must be accomplished while thanking the state government for handing over the management of the school to the Old Boys to manage.

In his speech, the Chairman of Umuahia branch of the school’s Old Boys Association, and Permanent Secretary, Government House, Umuahia Sir Onyii Wama thanked the Class of ’83 for coming together in unity, stating the obvious need for concerted efforts to restore the school to what it used to be in the past.

He congratulated them over the AGM, while urging them to step up efforts towards assisting the school through its main body, GCUOBA and as well support the school’s Fisher Trust Fund for the good of the school.
