FRSC to introduce safety studies in public schools to curb accidents

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has announced plans to incorporate road safety modules in the curricula of public schools. The new Sector Commander, in charge of Akwa Ibom state, Corps Commander Sunday Oghenekaro, said on Wednesday in Uyo the state capital that plans have reached advanced stage for implementation of the policy.
The FRSC boss said the commission has also concluded plans to introduce program as such as FRSC clubs, seminars, debates, quiz and other enlightenment programmes aimed at inculcating in the young ones the values of road safety cultures.
“All these are meant to ensure that when they grow up, they will not depart from it”.
Oghenekaro disclosed that the commission has met with relevant agencies including the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Education Council (NEC) with a view to working out modalities for the implementation of the policy in the basic schools system.
The Sector Commander said he was in Akwa Ibom state to enforce effective driving ethics and road culture among motorists and other road users.
He enjoined other para-military organizations to partner with the Commission to create sanity on the roads, assuring that the Moslem Sallah celebrations beginning from June 23, 2017, would be hitch-free.
Oghenekaro urged drivers to imbibe good driver culture, noting that the speed limiter regime was fully in place and enjoined non-conformists to ensure they drive within the regulatory framework of the law.
“The implementation of speed limiter devices has already recorded high level compliance since it was launched in February 2017”, he stressed and frowned at attitude of some motorists who are in the habit of opposing the policy.
He warned field officials against compromising their work by collecting bribe from erring motorists, adding that the monitoring department of the agency would leave no stone unturned in bringing erring officials to book.
The State government, he said, would do well to provide logistics support to ensure smooth operations and enforcement of sanity on the roads.
