FRSC celebrates world day of remembrance for road traffic victims

Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Owerri, Imo state, Tuesday celebrated the World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims.

The programme which began at about 9:30am in the morning and lasted for more than two hours, saw the FRSC in a group match cum sensitisation of people, especially road users, from their head quarter office, Egbu road Owerri.

The group match started from Road safety junction, Egbu road Owerri to Relief market junction, ably led by the sector commander, Mr. Joseph Aremu, FRSC staff, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) staff, Daily Times Newspaper staff, commercial drivers, and many others.

The event was marked with sharing of flyers cum guidelines on how road users should avoid accident, and ensure that passengers and relatives are not wounded.

It was one of the major things done, before the sector commander addressed luxury bus, commuter bus drivers etc, at the main park at Relief market junction, Owerri.

Addressing the drivers and other road users, Mr. Aremu said the commission is committed in ensuring that speed limit device is applied to all road users.

Speaking on the theme “Road Have Stories”, Mr. Aremu said human factor was a major contributing factor to road crashes in Nigeria and said if speed limit device is applied by all road users, the case will be different.

“We have started enforcing speed limit device in Imo state in the last four years but there are still those who have not complied with the directive.

“We will ensure that commuters comply with the rule, while those who do not comply will face the full wrath of the law”, he said.

He explained that most road crashes are traceable to driving against traffic especially in the urban cities.

He told road users that the command came to sensitize them on the need to be civil on the road.

“We have come to identify with you on the remembrance of the world accident victim day and we want you to always obey the traffic rules”, he said.

He mentioned over speeding, drinking while driving, overloading and use of cell phones while driving as major cause of road crashes.

The sector commander further stated that the command has made recommendations to FERMA and state ministry of works to apply palliative measures in tackling bad roads in the society.

World Day of Remembrance for Traffic victims, is annually celebrated in the world every third Sunday of November, and FRSC Imo state sector decided to start her own on Tuesday, November 13, to enable them carry out their programmes very well and ensure that most road users are engaged in large number since most of them use the roads on week days.
