Segun Olowookere, a 31-year-old man who was just released from Kirikiri prison after serving 10 years on death row for armed robbery, has described his terrifying ordeal in jail.

In November 2010, Mr. Olowookere and Sunday Morakinyo, his co-suspect, were taken into custody in Oyan, Odo-Otin Local Government, Osun State. They were taken into custody for armed robbery, which involved the theft of eggs and hens.

On December 17, 2014, the Osun State High Court, Ikirun Division, sentenced them to death. During their recent viral ordeal, various observers questioned how they could have received a death sentence for stealing eggs and hens.

On December 26, however, the Osun State judiciary defended the death sentence that Mr. Olowookere and his accomplice had received ten years prior.
