Former Tunisia head coach Maaloul takes over the Syrian job

Former Tunisia national team Coach Nabil Maaloul has been appointed as Syria’s new head coach ahead of 2022 World Cup qualifiers that will resume later this month.
Maaloul was in charge of Tunisia at the 2018 World Cup in Russia where they finished third in Group G. He has also been in charge of Qatari outfit Al Duhail where he left halfway through the season in 2019 after guiding them in 17 games.

The 57-year-old expressed his delight and gratitude for the Syrian Federation for Football.
“I am happy to be appointed as Syria’s new head coach and delighted with the Syrian Football Federation’s trust in me,” Maaloul said on Twitter.
“Our primary objective is to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.”
Syria are currently perched on top of Group A in the second round of Asia’s World Cup qualifiers with 15 points and on course to qualify for the third round.

The third round consists of two groups of six teams, where the first two teams in each group secure qualification for the World Cup.
