…warns against indiscriminate disposal of refuse

Anambra State government has commenced action to reduce in totality, the high level of flooding ravaging some communities around Ogbaru and Onitsha areas.

The flooding in recent times had threatened the lives and properties of the people in the zones.

In solving the menace, Governor Willie Obiano visited Sakamori River in Ogbaru, to ascertain various measures to creating lasting solutions.

On the spot assessment, swamp buggy excavator was evacuating and dredging the confluence of Sakamori and Idimili rivers to allow free flow of the river.

Gov Obiano while inspecting the ongoing dredging said it would prevent heavy flooding that occurs in the communities around.

He warned against indiscriminate disposal of refuse in the river, to avoid blocking water canals.

The Governor directed the Transition Chairmen of Ogbaru and Onitsha to enforce implementation and penalise defeaulters.

The contractor handling the dredging, Mr. John Arachie, explained that “Idimili river and Sakamori have a confluence, because of the high pressure in Idimili river, it doesn’t allow Sakamori to flow.

“We are building concrete retaining wall to allow the free flow of Sakamori. The width of the dredging is 10 meter and 5 meters deep down from Sakamori to River Niger.

“It will take us four months to complete, due to other sections of the dredging, such as evacuation of debris, expansion and others,” Arachie explained.
