FG’s intervention fast-tracking siemens power project, says Adelabu

BY MOTOLANI OSENI

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has credited the federal government’s intervention with accelerating progress on the Siemens-backed Presidential Power Initiative, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s electricity supply chain.

Adelabu said the project, which had seen limited advancement before 2023, gained new momentum following the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which signed an accelerated contract to push the initiative forward.

The minister described the Presidential Power Initiative as a product of Nigeria’s bilateral partnership with Germany, first conceived in August 2018 to boost the country’s generation, transmission, and distribution capacity. He noted that President Tinubu’s administration had shown clear commitment to ensuring the initiative delivers improved electricity to industrial hubs, businesses, and homes nationwide.

Adelabu highlighted that the president had mandated the signing of an acceleration agreement with Siemens Energy to fast-track implementation, which has led to tangible milestones, including quicker contract approvals and strengthened programme governance.

While acknowledging the contributions of past administrations, Adelabu stressed that the current government had approved a new technical direction for the project. Under this new focus, Siemens Energy will concentrate on modernising the transmission subsector through a Turnkey approach, while other qualified engineering and procurement firms will handle the distribution segment.

The minister reaffirmed that the administration remains committed to delivering a reliable power supply as a foundation for economic growth and national development.
