Federal pensioners to get 13 months arrears

Federal civilian and paramilitary pensioners have confirmed the commencement of payment of 13 months arrears out of the 42 months owed them by the federal government.

A statement from the National President of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Dr. A. O. Afolayan and General Secretary, Elder Actor Zal, described the development as a big relief to the pensioners and a pleasant surprise which came at a very difficult time.

The union leaders expressed satisfaction with the payment but reminded government that the 12 months arrears is just part of the backlog of 42 months arrears.

They therefore appealed to the government to complete the payment quickly. They urged state and local governments to emulate the federal government’s gesture by paying their pensioners.

The union commended the efforts of PTAD under its new management whose initiative it said had resulted in the payment and members of the House Committee on Pension who stood by the union to ensure the payment.
