Family of slain ex-UNILAG student cries for justice

The family of a graduate of business administration student of University of Lagos (UNILAG), Yusuf Elegushi has been thrown into mourning following his gruesome murder by a hoodlum.

His father, Chief Muritala Adedoyin Elegushi has therefore appealed Lagos state Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode and the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni to urgently fish out the killers and bring him to justice.

Speaking with our correspondent, Chief Elegushi alleged that the deceased, 26-year-old Yusuf, was shot dead last Thursday, at about7.30 pm by a notorious gangster identified as Lawal.

He claimed that his son, who was the chairman of Building Materials Suppliers, Alaguntan village chapter, Ajah Lagos, was hit at the chest by a bullet fired by Lawal while trying to rescue a victim that had earlier been shot by the same Lawal.

While the assailant took to his heels, the distraught Lagos high chief said his son was rushed to the Yaba General hospital where he was confirmed dead.

According to Elegushi, a disagreement had occurred between a gang led by one Lawal and a man identified only as Dodo over the sum of N 3,000.00 two days earlier during which time Lawal sustained injury on his jaw.

As a result, Elegushi added that the Lawal gang had mobilised in large number on the day of the sad incident at Alaguntan building site to revenge the assault meted on Lawal by Dodo, which eventually resulted in the death of his son.

“As the hoodlums emerged from nowhere, Lawal was said to have brought his pistol and shot at one of the boys at the site, thinking it was Dodo and they ran into hiding. My son who knew nothing about the incident just walked innocently to save the man, but was also shot by the same Lawal. My son was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital”, he mourned.

The matter was reported at Ogombo Police Station, where three members of the gang were arrested and the matter transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.

Elegushi, who described his son as a quiet and easy going person, said the late father of two children had made arrangement on how to mark his 26th birthday in April.

A manhunt is still on for the other members of the gang while investigation continues.

He said the family had petition both the state governor and the commissioner of police for them to search for the killer and bring him to justice.

The father of the deceased maintained that this is not the first time that the Lawal group would engage in such gruesome murder of innocent souls in the area, adding that such matters had always been swept under the carpet by the police.

He accused the Lawal gang as being one of the numerous killer gangs in Alaguntan village,  Ikota, Olukotun, Gedegede, Moba, Isakaba and Mabro estate, commonly used by land grabbers and politicians.

Claiming that the bandits were always released almost immediately when being arrested on similar incidents in the past at the instant of their political godfathers, Elegushi vowed that every legal means will be taken by the family to ensure that justice prevails to deter further occurrence

The police public relations officer (PPRO) Dolapo Badmus, have confirmed the incident and said investigation is going on, that the police will leave no stone untrue to unravel the  case.
