Family demands release of DPO detained for murder

The family of the divisional police officer detained for the murder of a police Sergeant, Onalaja, Onajide, in Lagos, has called for the release of their son, saying that he is innocent of the allegation.

The family which faulted the arrest and detention of the police officer, Yahaya Adeshina, is insisting he should be freed unconditionally.
Spokesman of the family, Alhaji Ibrahim Isiaka, while describing their son, as a throughbred and decent officer, said their son should be absolved of the crime and given a clean bill of health.

Recall that the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu had ordered the detention of the divisional police officer, pending further investigation into the alleged crime.
The police coommissioner through a statement by the state’s Police Public Relation Officer, Bala Elkana, said that apart from being in their custody at the state’s Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, the suspect’s rifle has been seized for forensic examination.
Preliminary investigation indicate that Adeshina had attempted to disperse a crowd that had gathered in front of the station at about 9:30 pm on May 10, on the ground that a curfew declared by the federal government was in force.
An unknown gunman is said to have allegedly shot into the crowd, killing Onajide, who was on guard duty at the station, while the suspect and his another officer narrowly escaped death.
The suspect, it was learnt has continuously expressed his innocence over the unfortunate incidence.
Consequently, his family members have urged Nigerians to prevail on the police authorities to release their son in the interest of justice.
