Ezenwa assures on Eagles’ AFCON ticket

Ikechukwu Ezenwa believes the Super Eagles can still qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon. Ezenwa was overlooked in Saturday’s 2019 AFCON qualifier in Uyo against South Africa, with technical adviser Gernor Rohr opting to start with Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi in the 2-0 defeat to Bafana Bafana.

The FC Ifeanyiubah goalkeeper says he was not disappointed when he learned that he would not be starting against South Africa at the ‘Nest of Champions’.

“No, I was not disappointed when I got to know Akpeyi would start the game because the coach (Rohr) had a decision to make,” Ezenwa told supersport.com.

“This is a family and whether you play or are on the bench, you have to support your teammate.

“We are not happy with the loss to South Africa because we know Nigerians expected us to win the game.

“It was hard luck (to lose to South Africa) but this is football and sometimes you win or lose.

“We have to take it in good fate because we know there are still many games to play in the (AFCON) qualifiers.

“The belief amongst the players is that we can still qualify for the 2019 AFCON in Cameroon and I know we will,” he concluded.
