Exclusive: Why I Left Sunshine Stars For Kwara United – Fatokun

NPFL club Kwara United have completed the signing of defensive midfielder from Sunshine Stars, the club announced last week.
Fatokun played three seasons at the Akure club having joined from his home state club Osun United at the start of the 2017/18 NPFL season.
The Ede born and raised ‘midfield trojan’ who is highly loved and supported in his hometown in an exclusive interview with Daily Times Nigeria answered questions on the move.
“I have played three seasons at Sunshine Stars and done my best for the team, I needed to move for a new challenge, that’s why I moved. When the offer came, I decided on my own that it was time to move.” Fatokun said in response to what necessitated the move.
Sunshine Stars finished 10th after the 2019/20 season was cancelled and positions decided by points per game format, while Kwara United finished 19th, that posed a question of why he left a mid-table club to join a relegation battlers.

“I had a lot of offers from big teams in the NPFL, for me to have joined Kwara United, I looked at the background of the club, they are ready to do well, they want to do everything to be at the top, with what I saw when I negotiated with them, they are ready. Look at Leicester City, they came from the championship to win the Premier League in a few years, I think we can do it.
“I had offers from Enyimba and Lobi Stars, if I was ready to sign for them, there wouldn’t have been a problem moving there but I don’t want to make a move I’ll regret later. I don’t want to move to a club I would be sitting on the bench, I want a club where I would have playing time.” the 22 years old said.
He was an important player at Sunshine Stars as one of the mainstay of their midfield, he talked about how the club felt on letting an important player like him leave:
“The club felt sad about it, I felt bad leaving the club too because they love me so much and I love them too but I have to move. I can’t say because I have peace of mind and comfortable there that I’d stay there for long. This is the right time to move and they should take it like that.”
Fatokun completed his transfer to the club on the same day as former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Dele Aiyenugba. He described the move as a good move that will help the team.
“It was a good move for him and for the team also, seeing him in goal will help us a lot. He’s a senior man who would advise us and control us on the pitch. We would gain a lot of experience from him,” he concluded.
