The Delta state government on Monday said that the European Union in partnership with the state had funded 333 water schemes in four local government areas in the last two years.

State Commissioner for Water Resources, Chief Fidelis Tilije, who confirmed the executed projects by EU to journalists in Asaba, described water as a social and economic good and enjoined water consumers’ association in the communities to generate some revenue from the water schemes in order to effectively maintain and sustain their usefulness.

While commending Governor Okowa for result oriented approach adopted towards the realization of his administration’s policies and programmes, particularly, in the provision of potable water supply, the commissioner however, called on the benefitting communities to take ownership of the water infrastructure and described water as sensitive commodity that plays critical role in the health and well-being of every human being.

The Head of Cooperation, European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Kurt Cornelis, commended the state government for the payment of its counterpart contribution for the projects and urged the beneficiaries of the water facilities to fashion out ways of ensuring the maintenance and sustainability of the infrastructure

Meanwhile, the state government has assured that it would faithfully implement the new national minimum wage law.

Special Adviser to the state governor on labour matters, Comrade Mike Okeme, said that the administration would comply with the new law on national minimum wage, assuring that the state will do everything possible to pay the new minimum wage.
