Electricity: Don’t rely on National Grid – NSE tells State Govts

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) have stressed the need for various State Governments of the Country to commence the process of supplying Electricity to their citizens across the Country.

NSE Vice President, Danladi Adamu stated this while presenting a Paper on the occasion of the 2023 Engineering Week of Jalingo Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers held at the Catholic Pastoral Centre, Mile Six in Jalingo the Taraba State capital.

Adamu, who showcased the presence of an Electricity Act of 2023 which he emphasized has given power to States to develop, generate, transmit and distribute their own Electricity to the people
said State Governors don’t have to rely on National Grid before thinking of making power supply available to their people residing at various locations.

“We don’t have to rely on the National Grid before the people would enjoy Electricity”, he said.

Following the enforcement of the Electricity Act, Adamu disclosed, there can be State and Local Governments’ Grids.

He however, added that the State Governments can partner with Companies or Investors so that Dams or any form of Energy that are renewable can be produced for the betterment of their States.

Danladi Adamu further advised the Taraba State Government to expand the Highland Tea Factory situated at Kakara Community of Sardauna Local Government Area of the State for increased productivity.

“Government should expand the Factory by increasing the Tea Farm, buy more Equipments and construct the Tunga Dam so that the Factory will become larger, enhance productivity and increase the Revenue base of the State”, said Adamu.

The Vice President while presenting his Paper titled, “The Contributions of Highland Tea Brands of Mambilla Beverages to the Economy and National Development”, he revealed that Highland Tea is a product of Mambilla Beverages, wholly owned by the Taraba State Government and was established in September, 2012.

He added that the Company has in its employment over 1,000 Permanent Staff, over 4,000 Casual Staff and assists over 2,000 Out Growers Scheme scattered in 27 Villages within a radius of 20km.

“Mambilla Beverages is the only Company in Nigeria and West Africa that grows Tea Plants because, the Mambilla Plateau has the best suitable climatic condition for Tea production in West Africa”, he added.
