Electrical dealers set up task force against sub-standard products

In a bid to stem-up the incessant outbreak of fire in buildings due to substandard electrical materials and to assist the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) in checking the influx of fake and substandard electrical products which are flooded in the Nigerian market, the leadership of Electrical Dealers International Market, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area Of Anambra State has inaugurated a task force to inspect all goods coming into the market.

The major function of the body is to adhere to strict inspection of containers that convey goods into the market.

This was necessitated according to investigation by our reporter that the past administration of the Director-General of Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Joseph Odumodu was enmeshed in sharp practices with importers of fake household products after allegedly reaching a mutual agreement with greedy importers who engage in the importation of all sorts of fake materials into the country in collaboration with the regulatory agency who are routinely “settled by the importers’ association. That arguably, however, could be the reason of the influx of sub-standard products into Nigeria despite the presence of SON.

It has previously been argued that the owners of such sub-standard products had often had their goods confiscated and displayed before the press. It was rumoured that those who refused to comply with the dictates of the importers’ body often run into trouble of having their containers impounded by SON.

It was arguably based on its previous experience and complaints by consumers and other concerned bodies that the new leadership of the electrical market led by its Chairman, Mr Peter Obi, the Vice Chairman, Chief Chukwuma Agbasinwa and other members of the executive decided to put in  place a task force that will inspect all containers coming into the market.

The Chairman, Mr Obi who spoke to our reporter on the issue said the new leadership was determined to rid the market of fake and sub-standard electrical products. He said that presently the taskforce was doing a good job  and enjoined customers coming into the market to patronize them to be best guaranteed of good and quality electrical materials. He expressed the readiness of the market to partner with SON to ensure that no sub- standard product is sold in the market.
