Elders, Women Group Vow To Cast Evil Spell On Family As Mother Rejects Circumcision of Daughter

The elders of Ewohimi community in Esan South-east local government area of Edo state have vowed to invoke and cast evil spell on the family of Lucky Sonia and her daughter over her outright refusal to allow elders perform the mandatory family circumcision on her little daughter Lucky Gift several years after her birth in Europe.

Recall that the elders of Lucky Godwin, husband of Lucky Sonia, in Ewohimi Ogbe quarters have been at loggerheads with each other immediately after the birth of little Lucky Gift on January 14th 2019 in far away France as family rites in Esan culture demands her circumcision after birth .

However the row between the elders and Lucky Sonia assumed a more worrisome and dangerous dimension as elders and the women group recently vowed to invoke evil spell on the family for refusing to bring back their first daughter for the mandatory circumcision on her in order to eliminate every tendency of promiscuity in adulthood.

An elder in the family who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed that in Esan culture in Edo state it was mandatory for every girl-child to undergo the ritual of female genital mutilation in order to eliminate every possibilities of promiscuity during adulthood.

The family source further said that while it was very embarrassing and disturbing that Lucky Sonia, mother of little Lucky Gift, was standing in the way of acceptable cultural norms by refusing to bring back her daughter for her circumcision, elders in the family have resolved to invoke and cast a spell on them.

According to the elder, no female child in the family can be exempted from the cultural practice of female genital mutilation (circumcision) which dates back to several years in the history of the community.

He cautioned the mother of little Lucky Gift not to question the authority of the elders in whatsoever manner the practice of circumcision would be performed on her daughter adding that every girl-child in the community, no matter how crude the process was, would be required by custom and tradition to undergo the procedural process of circumcision irrespective of wherever she was delivered by her mother.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that Lucky Sonia’s refusal to bring back her daughter to participate in the age-long cultural practice of female genital mutilation (circumcision) was against the backdrop of recent records of increasing mortality rates of every girl subjected to the crude practice as many were reported to have died from excessive bleeding from use of unsterilized sharp objects such as razor and broken bottles as there are no trained medical personnel to urgently address emergency situations with infection that arises from the ruthless and crude practice.

According to another source in the family who re-echoed Lucky Sonia’s worries from her response to the elders after resolving not to bring back her daughter for circumcision, she disclosed that Lucky Sonia was very clear in her statement when she requested not comply with the demands of the elders to bring back little Lucky Gift for circumcision and her simple response was “No way, I would not allow some evil, crude cultural practice take my daughter’s life in the name of circumcision.”

However, as the rift between both elders and the family of Lucky Godwin continues, there are strong indications that the elders are bent on invoking the spirit and ancestors of the land in Ewohimi Ogbe quarters to cast evil spell on Lucky Sonia and her family wherever they are as punitive measure for desecrating the norms and culture of the land .
