EFCC is investigating VCs, Bursars of federal varsities – NUC boss

The Economic and financial Crime Commission (EFCC) is currently investigating a number of Vice Chancellors and Bursars of federal universities over shady financial deals and non-compliance with extant varsity financial laws and establishment circulars emanating from relevant Federal Government agencies.

The Executive Secretary of the National universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Abdul Rasheed, who made the above disclosure on Tuesday during a two day workshop organised for Bursars from Federal universities, accused the Vice Chancellors of living above their lawful means, with some earning salaries that are un-imaginable.

According to the NUC chief executive, most vice chancellors collect furniture allowance up to the tune of N480,000 and Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) of about N90,000 when top civil servants in the education ministry do not collect up to N20,000 as duty travel allowances.

He further accused the Bursars of undermining the implementation of agreements between government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as well as not living up to their duties, thereby giving the vice chancellors and to some extent the Governing council members the opportunity to trample upon university financial regulations.

Abdul Rasheed also announced the visit of Chairman of EFCC to the commission next week with a view to setting up a date for an extended interactive meeting with the university administrators.

He described the workshop as timely especially as it will enable the financial administrators reconcile government financial circulars with the frequent demands of the governing councils, adding that “ the meeting will help foster closer collaboration between NUC and the universities in the implementation of government accounting policies’’.
