Ebonyi restates commitment to technical, vocational education

Ebonyi State Government has reiterated its commitment to boost technical and vocational education to enhance economic growth.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. John Eke, made the statement on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki.
He said that technical and vocational education is needed to advance the quest for economic growth and industrialisation.
He said that no nation could develop beyond the scope of its scientific and technological know-how, adding that science, technical and vocational knowledge were required to power economic and industrial growth.
Eke said that the Ebonyi government had established three functional technical colleges equipped with modern facilities to boost the acquisition of technical and vocational skill by the students.
He said: “technical and vocational knowledge are critical component of economic growth.
“The new national education curriculum emphasises science, technical and vocational oriented education.
“The idea is to motivate and encourage the youths from the cradle to develop their potential and acquire requisite skills that will make them creative and entrepreneurs.
“Our technical colleges include Government Technical College Abakaliki, Afikpo Government Technical College and Girls Technical College Agba.
“These schools are equipped with state-of-the-Art facilities to boost teaching and learning of technical education.
“Development is a physical expression of knowledge acquired.
“Personnel trained in these institutions will in turn apply the knowledge of what they learnt to develop and grow our economy and infrastructure.
The commissioner pointed out that priority would be given to training and retraining of science, technical and vocational teachers to enhance their capacity.
He said that the state was interested in raising people that would use their technical expertise to develop and grow the economy through the establishment of industries and vocational centres.
