Democracy Day: Mimiko grants amnesty to 11 inmates in Ondo

The Governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on Monday, granted pardon to eleven convicts serving different jail terms, in different prisons in the state, as a part of the celebration the 2016 Democracy Day.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, the Governor said that the gesture was in line with the power conferred on him by Section 212 (1)  of the Constitution of  Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.
Akinmade said reprieve came for the prisoners following considered requests and application for full and conditional pardon made to Mimiko by human rights and civil society organisations.
He added that the state Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy recommended some convicts for release and commutal of sentences to the Governor to mark the Democracy Day.
“Following which 8 prisoners have been granted outright pardon, while three others got their death sentences commuted to life and 18 years imprisonment, respectively” he said.
The information commissioner said the convicts, who had all served portions of their term were granted amnesty on the ground of good conduct and being outstanding models.
