Rape Allegation: D’banj Cleared By Police, Reaches Agreement With Seyitan

Popular Nigerian singer, Dapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj has been cleared by the police in the rape allegation brought against him by one Seyitan Babatayo.

Seyitam in a series of tweets had claimed the singer had raped her in her hotel room in Victoria Island, Lagos after she had earlier refused his advances at a party.

Daily Times gathered that D’banj had denied the allegation and said his legal team would file defamation charges against Seyitan.

He demanded that Seyitan pays the sum of N100 m within 48 hours of his response, or would risk legal action and also asked for an apology.

Stand To End Rape (STER), one of the organisations involved in the case in a statement said the singer and Seyitan had reached a non-monetary agreement.

This came as a surprise to many as Seyitan revealed that shortly after she went public with the accusation, she was held in police custody and coerced to retract her statement.

She also revealed then that the case had been pushed to the Inspector-general of police and a new investigation was ordered.

However, STER in a statement said: “On the 13th of July 2020, Ms Babatayo informed STER that a private non-monetary agreement was reached with D’banj’s team.”

Recall that in the wake of social media campaign to end rape, Seyitan had come out alleging that she was raped by the artiste on December 30, 2018.

She claimed D’banji had sneaked into her hotel room at past midnight, while she was asleep, violated and raped me.

Seyitan also alleged that a policeman at Bar Beach Police Station, acting on D’banj’s orders had also ignored her initial report of the sexual harassment.
