Commercial vehicle catches fire, kills two in Lagos

A commercial bus with registration number KTW 479 XQ on Friday at about 2:55pm accidentally somersaulted, caught fire while on top speed at “Cane village”, Maryland Lagos killing a pregnant woman and one other.

According to an eyewitness account, the commercial bus popularly known as danfo was trying to overtake a Toyota Highlander, which was equally speedily descending the Maryland Bridge when it somersaulted and caught fire instantly.

The driver, conductor and four other occupants of the bus were reported to have escaped with injuries while the ladies who were trapped in the fire completely got burnt.

According to a press statement issued by the Lagos State Emergency Management (LASEMA), “the Agency had received a distress call on the incident and on arrival at the scene, preliminary investigation conducted by the ERT at the incident scene revealed that the commercial bus which was coming from Yaba at top speed, lost control after hitting an unknown Jeep at Cane Village, Maryland, fell on its side and caught fire.”

The Agency revealed that the recovered bodies had been handed over by Lasema ERT to SEHMU for deposition at Mainland Hospital Morgue.

The five other persons who were rescued and are been attended to by a joint team of LASAMBUS and the LASEMA Paramedics.Thereafter the victims were taken to the Trauma and Burns Centre,Gbagada for further treatment, while .

The Accidented vehicle was checking was recovered by the ERT had been taken to LASTMA Yard Oshodi.

The General Manager LASEMA Adesina Tiamiyu said proper investigation would be conducted, he however advised motorist to drive with utmost care and safety as most of these accident are avoidable.
