Chinese national breaks labourer’s waist

Jin Yu, a Chinese national working with a furniture company at its Magboro, Ogun state branch, has allegedly broken the waist of 24 year old Ekanem Williams, a Nigerian working as supervisor in the polish department of the company.
Ekanem Williams, according to sources have been working with the furniture company as a labourer for all of 11 years without confirmation. The Daily Times reliably gathered that on the early hours of this fateful day, Ekanem resumed work as he used to do around 7.00 a.m and bought a retail rice from the company retail customer.
Jin Yu, the Chinese national allegedly came into the company same time. When he sighted Ekanem with a polythene bag, he moved called him to know what was in the bag.
Ekanem, according to our source, allegedly told Jin Yu that the bag contained ‘chop chop’, making signs in his attempt to explain that it was his breakfast.
Our source revealed that Jin Yu who came into Nigeria about seven months ago, do not understand English, while Ekanem Williams, a Nigerian, did not understand Chinese language either.
This misunderstanding however developed to an argument and graduated into a brawl between Jin Yu and Ekanem during which the Chinese broke Ekanem’s waist.
The Daily Times gathered that the wounded Ekanem, unable to stand up started crying. His wailing attracted his co-workers who carried him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
After first aid treatment, Ekanem was able to get up but has no money to pay the hospital bill. He then managed to report the incident to a human rights activist at Ibafo who took up the case.
The activist, it was gathered, immediately invited the Ibafo police into the matter where the Divisional Police Officer, ordered the immediate arrest of the Chinese national.
But at the furniture company at Magboro, Ekanem, accompanied by policemen, were not allowed to take Jin Yu away; rather, they sent a representative who followed the law officers to their station at Ibafo.
But a twist developed in the story as the activist who invited the police later on discovered later that the Ibafo Divisional Police Officer could no more handle the case; instead, he instructed that the case be transferred to Sagamu Division for thorough investigation.
At Sagamu Division, the I.P.O, ordered a comprehensive test on Ekanem, to ascertain the level of his broken waist. To t his end the I.P.O gave Ekanem a letter to New Image Ultrasound clinic at Olorunsogo, Abeokuta for further tests.
At the hospital situated at 1, Atanda Solanke Street, Opposite Sagamu Garage, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Consultant, Dr. Ogunmoroti carried out tests and came out with a result which was shown to our correspondent. The result states that “There is marked straightening of normal lumber Lordosis this probably due to painful muscle contraction.
Presenting the hospital result to the I.P.O at Sagamu, he immediately ordered for the arrest of Jin Yu, also known as “Master One” but again, the company management prevented the arrest; instead, a lawyer named Elder Durojaiye was sent to represent the company.
In a chat with our correspondent, Elder Durojaiye, the Bedmate Furniture lawyer, confirmed the development and said that Bedmate Furniture is considering an amicable settlement to the matter. “Part of the settlement is to give Elkanem Williams the sum of N100,000 for food and his monthly salary of N35,000.
This is because the company discovered that Elkanem sustained no injury but was suffering from lack of nutrition. When he has eaten well and is fit to work, he can resume his work with the company again, the lawyer said, regretting that the situation could have been averted if there had been no
language barrier.
Ekanem according to the lawyer, Ekanem had allegedly stolen tapes from the company, so this caused Jin Yu to suspect that Elkanem was stealing the company properties again.”
Denying the allegation, Elkanam said he never stole the tapes in question, but that it was the same Jin Ju that gave him the tape. Rejecting the offer from his employers, Ekanem said the N100,000 cannot pay for his hospital bills.
The aggrieved Ekanem who turned down the company’s offer to resume work again, said he has contacted his lawyer who will soon approach court to claim N50 million as damages.
