Catalonia independence referendum holds against court order

Irrespective of court ruling of the high court of Spain against conducting referendum by Catalonia, the referendum actually held on Sunday 1st October 2017.

This happened as Human Rights Watch have urged Spanish authorities to refrain from excessive use of force to counter referendum of Catalonia.

The referendum however triggered crisis in Catalonia as people gathered on Sunday to vote in an independence referendum deemed illegal by Spanish authorities.

Agency report revealed footage of clashes between Spanish and Catalan security forces, as videos circulated on social media have shown clashes between officers from Spain’s military law enforcement agency, Guardia Civil, and Catalonia’s local police force, Mossos.

The Spanish police accused Mossos of not obeying a court order to halt the referendum, while Mossos insists it has been doing so in a “proportional way” and have threatened legal action against Mossos over the clashes.

Catalonia health department says 465 people have been treated for injuries from police violence.

It added that two of the most seriously injured are being treated in the hospitals of Sant Pau and Vall d’Hebron. Spain’s Interior Ministry however said that its security officer was also attacked by the Catalonia.

The Interior Ministry tweeted the video showing a chair being thrown at a security officer in Sant Joan de Vilatorrada. It said personnel from Guardia Civil have been met with “harassment and attacks” since the order to halt the referendum.
