Calabar: Police arrests 8 after deadly cult clash claim two
The Police Command in Cross River State has confirmed the arrest of eight suspects in the ongoing investigation into the deadly cult clash in Calabar South Local government area where two persons died.
The new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Jimoh Ozi-Obeh whose first week in the state was greeted with the cult clash incident said the command had swung into full gear over the matter and so far, some arrest of suspects have been made, adding that surveillance have been beefed up around the city.
“I don’t have much than to confirm that two death is recorded from the cult clash. We are investing the incident and we don’t know yet which cult groups and who they are. So far we have 8 persons that have been arrested following the deadly cult clash.”
Answering questions on the concern over quick responds of the police to crime screen upon reports, the CP said, it depends on when the report was given, and received. “Somebody called on crime in his area but he called we the criminals must have finished what there went there to do. But I am promising that if the response had been poor, we are going to improve on it. The major problem in Calabar, particularly Calabar south is cultism. But by God’s grace we are going to tackle it.” He cited.
According to the Police Chief, “Members of the public should not live in fear because the police is working round the clock to ensure they have and enjoy peace.
“All we need is information from the people and we assure them of their confidentialities. Don’t be afraid. If you are afraid, sometimes fear can harm you before criminal do.
“On Wednesday 8 June 2016, the residence of Calabar the Cross River State capital were in total fear following the clashes of two rival cult groups in the state. Places like Palm Street, Watt Market, Uwanse, Mount Zion, Ekpo Abasi, Inyang Edem were in lock down following the unrest.
“A man was reportedly killed in Mayne Avenue by Atakpa and after that another was gun down in the popular Watt Market still in Calabar which saw traders and commuters scamper for safety.”
