Senator Natasha arrives at national assembly despite unresolved suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has arrived at the national assembly in Abuja—despite a warning from the Senate that her suspension has not been officially lifted.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, made her way to the red chamber on Tuesday morning, in line with her earlier announcement that she would resume legislative duties on July 22.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier disclosed her intention to resume her seat in the Senate today, during a training session for constituents on Saturday.

“I have pretty much two months more before the six months expire,” she was quoted as saying by Channels TV.

“However, I have written to the senate again telling them that I’m resuming on the 22nd, which is on Tuesday, by the special grace of God.”

Her statement marks a direct challenge to the upper legislative chamber, which had suspended her in March 2025 for what was described as “unparliamentary conduct.”

But on Sunday, the Senate fired back.

In a statement signed by Yemi Adaramodu, chairman of the committee on media and public affairs, the Senate cautioned the Kogi lawmaker not to return until her suspension is formally lifted.

Adaramodu said there is currently no court order mandating the Senate to reinstate the suspended lawmaker,” and that the red chamber remains committed to due process and the rule of law.

There is, however, growing public scrutiny around the legality of indefinite suspensions, with some legal experts arguing they undermine the electoral will of constituents.
