Breaking: Jubilation as first flight lands in Akanu Ibiam Airport Enugu ahead of official reopening

The first flight has landed at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu today, Saturday, August 29 ahead of the official reopening scheduled for Sunday, August 30.

Daily Times gathered that the minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika, was in the flight flight that touched down at the airport one year after it was shut down for rehabiliation.

The federal government had shut down the Airport in August 2019 for repair and rehabilitation due to the bad runway and derelict facility.

Before the closure, there has been huge safety concern over the state of the runway as well as security concern.

The rehabilitation and reopening of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport has brought jubilation to many residents in the region as they praised President Muhammadu Buhari and the minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika, for the project.

Recall that following his meeting with southeast governors, President Buhari approved N10 billion for the upgrade of the airport.

He had said: “I have approved the sum of 10 billion Naira for an Intervention fund for the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

”I have the assurance of the Minister of Aviation that the work will be done speedily and to the highest standards.

“Even as we have many items competing for our limited resources, we will continue to prioritize infrastructure investments in every part of the country. It is our responsibility to ensure Nigeria’s infrastructure is fixed. we will keep doing this.”
