Bauchi to invest more on Agric to beat economic downturn

Following the seemingly economic downturn that may affect the global economy due to the effect of Coronavirus disease, Bauchi State government has resolved to invest more on agriculture.

The state commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning, Dr Aminu Gamawa, made this known on Thursday while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the state executive council meeting at the banquet hall, Government House, Bauchi.

“We presented two memos today at the Council Meeting, one is for the review of our 2020 budget and the other is for proposal for cutting down unnecessary expenditures”, the commissioner said.

According to him, “we have also suggested on the need for the state government to support investment in Agriculture by giving massive support to farmers to key into various agricultural initiatives.”

On the COVID-19 Economic Recovery Committee set up by Governor Bala Mohammed, the Budget and Economic Planning Commissioner who is the Chairman of the Committee, assured the determination of the committee to come up with a robust plan for the state.

“The decision to review our budget is to ensure that it reflects new economic realities of the state. We are currently working hard to eliminate wastefully spending and increase efficiency as well as to increase our IGR and promote agriculture”, he further explained.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Ahmed Modiddo highlighted some of the approval for his Ministry especially for the sale of old animals at Sumu Wildlife Parkin Ganjuwa Local Government Area of the state.

The Council also approved the review of the 2020 budget due to the negative impact of the current COVID-19 virus to the state economy.

Dr Aminu Gamawa said that the outbreak of coronavirus has affected the economy of not only Bauchi state, but the country and other countries at large.

The press briefing which was coordinated by the Commissioner of Information, Garba Dahiru, had in attendance, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Gidado.
