Basiru replaces Akwashiki as Senate spokesman

The Senate on Tuesday effected a slight change in its committee chairmanship positions as Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru (APC Osun Central) has been named as the new chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs.

He replaced Senator Godiya Akwashiki (APC Nasarawa North) who was in-charge for a few months as Senate spokesperson after Senator Adedayo Adeyeye was sacked by court as senator representing Ekiti South.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who made the announcement on Tuesday at the plenary, also named the erstwhile acting spokesman of the upper legislative chamber, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, as the new chairman, Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity.

In the minor committee chairmanship reshufflement, the Senate President also announced Senator Biodun Olujimi (PDP Ekiti South) as Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and NGOs earlier chaired by Ajibola Basiru.

The new Senate spokesman was a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Osun State.

He also served as Commissioner in the Ministry of Regional Integration & Special Duties from August 2010 – November 2014.

He will however be deputised by Senator Akwashiki who was before now, the vice chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs.
