Avengers strike NNPC gas pipeline in Akwa Ibom

Suspected members of the Niger Delta Avengers have attacked a gas pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Akwa Ibom state.

According to Mudoch Agbinibo, spokesman of the group, the attack took place in Nsit-Ibom local government area around 11:30pm on Sunday.

There has been no official confirmation of the sabotage, but the group usually announces its activities through statements on its website.

Nigeria’s oil production has dropped as a result of attacks from militants, who are currently divided over negotiation with the federal government.

While the Movement for the Emancipation for the Niger Delta (MEND) has set up a negotiating team as a result of the restiveness in the Niger Delta, Avengers say they will not dialogue with the government.

The group had repeatedly said that its aim was to cripple the country’s economy.
