ASUU Strike: UNICAL deserted, traders turn institution to football field

As the strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of  Universities, ,ASSU, enteres its sixth day, the economic, social and political activities at the University of Calabar have been grounded and students have deserted the institutions while traders and other businessmen and women have turned the university ground into a football pitch.

Our correspondent who was at the University on Tuesday, observed that very few staff were in some offices while some traders, businessmen and women were seen playing football and other games. Mr John Odey, a computer operator told our correspondent that the strike has affected their businesses.

“We have nothing to do than to relax ourselves by playing this ball and other games. Look round, how many students have you seen? They have all gone home. We have no alternative than to come here and relax ourselves, at least forget about tension at home. Look over there, other traders are playing other kind of games to ease tension. It’s not our fault,” he stated.

At various offices, This newspaper observed that workers were doing their personal businesses of buying and selling while others have not reported at all. Efforts to get the workers’ comment proved abortive as they said they were under instruction not to talk to anybody.
