Applicant docked over alleged armed robbery

A 31-year-old applicant, Omoyele Akinjide, who allegedly used a gun to rob commuters, was on Friday arraigned in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Akinjide, who resides at No. 17, Oshodi St., Majidun in Ikorodu, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Bosede Adegeshin, told the court that the defendant committed the offence with some others still at large on March 9 at Ogolonto Bus Stop, Ikorodu, Lagos.
Adegeshin said the accused robbed some commuters waiting to board buses to their various destinations.
“The accused and his cohorts used guns and other dangerous weapons to dispossess people of their cell phones and money.
“It was the scream of their victims that caught the attention of a policeman passing-by, who accosted them; he caught the accused while the others escaped,’’ she said.
Adegeshin urged the court to remand the accused in prison pending the determination of the case.
She said the offences contravened Sections 291 (1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 409 stipulates a two-year jail term for offenders.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Adelabu Olagbegi, ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison pending advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)
“He should be remanded in prison; his case file should be duplicated and sent to the DPP for legal advice,’’ she said.
The case was adjourned until June 15 for mention.
