Album Review: Simisola ‘Simi preaches originality and firmness in new album’
Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye which is well known by her stage name, Simi has proven she is no stranger in the Nigerian music industry. She won the heart of her music lovers through her joint EP album with Falz (the bahd guy). Chemistry, released in 2016.
Simi released her latest studio album titled “Simisola” on 8th September, 2017 which consists of 15 different tracks which includes remind me, Joromi (which is currently trending on TV stations),
Aimasiko, complete me, gone for good, original baby, Omo Kain, take me back, owa N’be, smile for me, Angelina, hip hop hurray and other three bonus tracks (love don’t care, jamb question and tiff).
Weeks before the release of this highly anticipated album, the single, Joromi was released to salivate the appetite of her music lovers.
The only guest artist in the album is Adekunle Gold, the pickup singer who tendered his vocals on the track “take me back”. The album “Simisola” was filled with different producers which include Oscar, Seyikeyz, Sess and Vtek, instruments from Fiokee, Alaba, Dami and Ayo, while mixing and mastering credits goes to simi and Vtek.
Simi focuses on love in some tracks in the album. She played the role of wooing a man in the Joromi video where she eventually got his attention.
“Complete me” is another strong emotional love song. It is about a woman who is helplessly in love using strong lyrics like “no one completes me more than you”,.”If I no get you it’s like faith without believe”, to convey how deep the love thing can easily go.
But in “Gone for good”, she is telling a story of a returnee lover who brings back the memories she never had intentions of reminiscing. The returnee lover comes back calling to take her back, but she remains adamant asking questions “why did you come back?” In a voice full of sadness & disappointment.
While in “original baby”, simi preaches originality using lyrics like “money don’t drive me, I drive my money, Maga don’t pay me, I pay my Maga. She also preaches self-love, confidence and contentment.
As for “Angelina”, the persona is tired of her lover’s surpasses, especially that of infidelity, she is willing to stay away from him and move on with her life. In the song her lover starts by using pseudonyms such as panel beater to save her concubines contacts when she is pretty sure that it must be Carolina.
“Take me back” is the only collabo track in the album featuring Adekunle Gold. Here they settled a relationship misunderstanding, the persona apologise to her lover who she address as Kunle using lyrics like “take me back”, “Shakara is over” assuring him she won’t let him down again.
The album also strays from love and touches the Yoruba values and virtues by the track “Aimasiko” a sample work of the evergreen singer Chief Ebenezer Obey. She is telling individuals to have faith and also believe in God, adding that everything in human’s life happens according to time.
In Owa N’be, the song mocks the belief that happiness and pleasure is the highest good thing in Lagos life. Anyone who resides in Lagos will be familiar with the custom and culture of owambe parties. A lavish high ranks parties, this song touches and covered every critical aspect of this life style.
The album “Simisola” is really an interesting album which x-trays different kind of love story also preaches originality. If you purchase it I bet you can’t regret.
