Akwa Ibom State govt partner EU/ ECOWAS to rehabilitate ex-militants

Akwa Ibom State government in collaboration with European Union and Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS) Small Arms/ Light Weapons Control intervention for Nigeria has commenced a skill acquisition training to rehabilitate repentant militants in the state.
The former militants drawn from Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo local government areas which were seized by hoodlums for three years until an amnesty was granted by Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Speaking in Uyo at the weekend, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Security Matters, Capt Iniobong Ekong (rtd) said the three months training on vocations will provide alternative source of livelihood for repentant militants.
“ It is a means to sustain and rehabilitate repentant militants. This would help us to sustain the peace that we have through the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel in the state.
We want to have a lasting peace in the state.” Ekong explained that the training would hold in Abuja where international resource persons will train the former militants on various skills and starter packs would be given to them.

He said the state government will provide all the logistics including transportation to Abuja.
“At the end of the training, they would be fully integrated into the society and we would have peace when they earn a living.”
