The Akwa Ibom state University (AKSU) has suspended one of its lecturers for allegedly raping a female undergraduate of the institution while the matter has been reported to the police for immediate action.

Addressing students and guardians at 9th matriculation ceremony at the university main campus in Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eno Ibanga said the university has instituted cash prize award of N100, 000 as reward for any member of the university’s community who would report a verifiable and established case of social vices within the institution.

“We have introduced whistle blowing policy in the university where anyone, staff or student that can help the university to curb social vices and when proved will be paid a token of N100, 000,” he said.

Prof. Ibanga mentioned these vices to include rape cases, payment for marks, cultism, impersonation and sex for marks prevalent in Nigerian universities.

He said out of 36, 500 candidates who sought admission into the university, 2, 305 were offered provisional admission while only 2, 173 were cleared for matriculation.

Prof. Ibanga announced the university’s decision to split the faculty of natural and management sciences to autonomous faculties of social and management sciences respectively.

He said the matriculation ceremony was the climax of all induction activities lined up for the new students after other orientation exercises to introduce them to the university community.

“Our students therefore, have no reason not to perform well in the midst of these provisions.

This administration is committed to the development of the university to be ranked as one of the best globally, so that our products can hold their heads high wherever they go with their certificates,” the vice-chancellor stated.

He further warned the matriculating students to imbibe the culture of excellence to project the institution to higher pedestal of academic recognition, warning that “remember this is the only university, solely owned by Akwa Ibom state and you are a part of this noble achievement if you tread on the right path during your academic sojourn here.”

Prof Ibanga assured the students that government was working hard to improve and maintain existing facilities in the institution and charged them to compliment the good intention of government throughout their stay.
