Adamawa poly students accuse mgt of registration fee fraud

Authorities of the Adamawa state Polytechnic Yola, has been accused of fraudulently diverting the registration fees of some students of the institution, leading to the closure of the institution.

Some of the affected students on Tuesday in Yola told newsmen that they had paid their registration fee to the bursary unit of the polytechnic campus located in Numan local government area of the state.

A diploma 2 student of the Department of Business Management who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that they paid their registration fees of N29,300 for indigenes and N37,000 for the non-indigene students and had being issued receipts.

He said, however, that their names did not appear on the list of students of the polytechnic which was pasted one week to their examinations on the account of nonpayment of registration fee.

According to the student, instead of the management to look into their plight and address it, they decided to close the school.

He accused the management of complicity in the whole saga, adding that the bursary unit, which coordinated the collections, was part of the polytechnic management.

He therefore, called on the state ministry of education to set up a panel of inquiry to look into the matter and also sack all staff that got involved in the fraud.

When contacted on the issue, the Information Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr. Albert Matilah, said that the management decided to close the school to avert violent demonstration on the campus.

Matilah said that the management had already constituted a panel of inquiry into the matter which was given one week to submit its report on its findings.

He urged students to be patient as their representatives would be invited to testify before the committee. He denied management complicity in the fees payment saga.

He however, noted that payment of fees were to be paid to the banks and not to individuals, adding that the panel would do a thorough investigation on the matter.
