Abia to partner UN Habitat over clean cities

Abia Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has assured the United Nations – Habitat and the Urban Thinkers Campus, Nigeria, of the readiness of the State to collaborate with them in achieving well-planned, clean and safe cities in Abia State.
The Governor was speaking while receiving in audience, a delegation of the Urban Thinkers Campus, Nigeria led by Hadgya Limota Giwa, who called on him at Government House, Umuahia, informing the team that the State needs support in the area of capacity building and re-training of members of the team in the State.
Dr. Ikpeazu disclosed that over the years, human activities have affected negatively, the environment and thereby caused environmental degradation and slumps development in the State and requested the United Nations – Habitat to intervene in slumps upgrade in the sState, promising that the government would do everything possible to ensure slumps do not develop again in the State.
He informed that the government and people of the State have gradually began to imbibe the culture of planning the Abia cities and thanked the team for finding Abia State worthy to be included in the programme.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Convener, Urban Thinkers Campus, Nigeria, Hadgya Limota Giwa noted that Abia State is in the need of support in urban habitat issues and community interventions. She said she would recommend to the UN-habit that the State needs a lot of technical support in order to achieve the new urban planing agenda.
Hadgya Giwa also thanked the Governor for providing enabling environment for the programme to hold in the State and said she would disseminate their findings on online to make Abia be in the world map of the United Nations – habitat.
