Aba Sports Club wins ENIC tennis tourney

It was celebration galore as the Aba Sports Club over the weekend made history as the fifth club to win the East of the Niger Inter Club (ENIC) Tennis Championship back-to-back after beating Onitsha Sports Club by three sets to two in the finals of the 18th ENIC tennis fiesta.

Clubs from Abia, Anambra, Awka Ibom, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers, Cross River and Imo states converged at the Enugu Sports Club for the event which produced some potential champions. Other clubs that have won the coveted trophy back-to-back include STDC of Owerri, Onitsha Country Club, Nnewi Sports Club and the Abakaliki Sports Club.

The President of Onitsha Sports Club, Chief Tobechi Ejezie and a veteran player for the club, along with Chief Emma Odeluga, highly commended both the players and the organisers for “not only grooming future champions, but providing recreation and friendship for all the clubs.”

For the Aba team they “hope to hold on to the cup for many more years to come” according to the president of the club, Chief Chinweoke Uzoalor, which he says is the priority of the club.

Organisers of the tournament, Chief Austin Agbaje, Mr. Ifeanyi Uzodike and Dr. Kachi Nworga, all called for more government’s intervention in sports, especially tennis which is a very expensive venture, while promising to continue in the support of ENIC games that has remained the longest running privately sponsored tennis championship South-East of the country.

Presenting the trophy to the winners, at a gala night chaired by the former Minister of Labour Chief Emeka Nworga, the 2017 ENIC Chairman, Chief Kingsley Uduh, charged other clubs to aspire to be the best they can be so as to become champions too in the next season which kicks off in October.
