Unknown boy drowns in swimming pool at Ilorin

There was disquiet in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital last weekend when the management of a hotel – the Royal Shekina, at the Ajase Ipo Road area in Ilorin, fished out the body of an unidentified young man from the hotel’s swimming pool. Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Yusjib Industrial Medicare, also at Ajase Ipo area in Ilorin, Dr Yusuf Abdulraheem, confirmed the death of a boy in his early twenties after he was reported to have drowned in the swimming pool of Royal Shekina hotel.

Abdulraheem told Daily Times that when the boy was brought to the hospital, he was lifeless. “We had to record ‘brought in dead’ in our assessment because his body vital signs were not recordable.” The CMD informed the hotel management staff that upon examination, the boy identified only as Daniel, was already dead before they arrived the hospital. Abdulraheem further informed that men and officers of the Nigerian Police Force from the ‘A’ Divison of the Kwara Command later took the corpse to the mortuary at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer of Kwara Police Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, who confirmed the incident told our correspondent that the deceased approached the hotel to swim before he apparently drowned in the process of swimming. The circumstances leading to his drowning was not clear and the identity of the boy was yet to be clearly defined at the time of filing in this report. Meanwhile, management of the hotel declined comments on the incident and directed all inquiries to the PPRO at the Kwara State Police Command.
